Music Business

The music industry is witnessing a significant transformation, as demonstrated by recent high-profile transactions involving major music catalogs. The Hipgnosis Songs Fund, known for owning rights to works by artists such as Neil Young and Shakira, recently found itself at the center of a bidding war. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Hipgnosis received a $1.50 billion offer from Blackstone, showcasing the immense value attributed to music catalogs in today’s market. This move underscores a growing trend where music rights are increasingly seen not just as artistic assets but as valuable investment commodities.

At Sprinklenet Music, while we operate at a startup level out of Colombia, we are keenly aware of the evolving dynamics in the music investment sphere. Our focus is on identifying and nurturing Latin music talents, with the aim of developing their potential and preparing them for such lucrative market opportunities. Our approach is tailored to harness the burgeoning interest in Latin music, which has been infused with diverse genres such as reggaeton, Latin trap, and blends with pop and electronic music, creating broad appeal across various listener demographics.

The growth of streaming has particularly revolutionized how music is consumed and monetized. As noted in The Guardian, streaming revenues have become a critical component of the music industry’s financial ecosystem, with companies like Hipgnosis leveraging these assets to provide substantial returns to investors. This model of generating steady income from streaming rights aligns with our strategy at Sprinklenet Music to not only support artists in the creation of music but also in the strategic management of their intellectual property.

“The acquisition represents an attractive opportunity for our shareholders to immediately realize their holding at a premium,” stated Hipgnosis Chairman Robert Naylor, emphasizing the strategic importance of such investments.

At Sprinklenet Music, we are building a bridge between emerging talents and these investment opportunities. By providing comprehensive support—from talent assessment to resource allocation—we prepare our artists to enter the market not just as performers but as potential partners in the broader entertainment and investment community.

The current shifts in the music industry highlight the critical role of strategic partnerships and innovative management in unlocking the value of music catalogs. For Sprinklenet Music, the journey is about more than discovering and promoting talent; it’s about positioning our artists at the forefront of these industry changes, ensuring they are equipped to thrive in a marketplace that values music as both art and asset.

As we continue to expand our operations and collaborations, we invite industry leaders, investors, and music enthusiasts to join us in shaping the future of music investment. Together, we can transform potential into success on the global stage.

The landscape of Latin music in the United States is experiencing an unprecedented surge, with recorded-music revenues hitting a record $1.4 billion in 2023, according to the latest report by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). This marks a significant 16% growth from the previous year, outpacing the overall US recorded market’s growth of 7.7%. What’s even more compelling is that this boom is driven largely by streaming, which accounts for more than 98% of these revenues.

At Sprinklenet Music in Colombia, we’re positioned at the heart of this exciting trend. While still in the early stages as a startup, we see immense potential in the evolving dynamics of Latin music. The genre is not just growing; it’s diversifying, blending with a myriad of other styles to create something truly unique. From the rhythmic beats of Reggaeton to the soulful harmonies of Latin Trap, artists are experimenting with sounds like never before, incorporating elements from pop, hip-hop, and electronic music to reach a broader audience.

At Sprinklenet Music, we are dedicated to tapping into this rich vein of artistic creativity by working closely with local talent. Our approach involves conducting thorough assessments to identify artists with the potential to resonate not just locally but globally. We provide these artists with the resources they need to refine their sound and artistic vision. Our goal is not just to discover but to actively help craft the next wave of major hits that could dominate playlists around the world.

This growth is especially notable in streaming platforms, where paid subscriptions have seen a remarkable increase. The RIAA report highlights a 21% growth in paid subscriptions, amounting to $915 million. This is reflective of a wider trend where audiences are increasingly willing to pay for premium content, providing a lucrative avenue for new artists to make their mark.

Furthermore, ad-supported streams continue to play a crucial role, particularly for Latin music, where they contribute nearly a quarter of the total revenue. This is significantly higher than the overall market and underscores the genre’s broad appeal and accessibility.

As we look to the future, Sprinklenet Music is excited to be part of this dynamic industry shift. By nurturing talent and embracing the streaming revolution, we are not just following trends; we are aiming to set them. We invite all music lovers and industry stakeholders to join us on this journey, as we explore the rich cultural tapestry of Latin music and help usher in its next big stars.

Sprinklenet Music artist discovery and search

At Sprinklenet Music, we’re on a mission – a quest to discover artists who not only possess raw talent but also exhibit an undeniable hunger for their craft. Our approach to finding these unique individuals is deeply rooted in community engagement and careful observation.

Ground-Level Discovery: Connecting with Local Communities

Our journey begins at the grassroots level, immersing ourselves in the local music scene. This means connecting with people within the community, attending local performances, and being present where music happens. It’s in these authentic settings that we get to witness potential artist partners in their element, pouring their hearts into every note and lyric.

Looking Beyond Technical Skills

When scouting for talent, our focus isn’t solely on the technical aspects or quality of the performance – factors often limited by resources and opportunities. Instead, we’re searching for something more intrinsic: raw energy, talent, and a burning desire to succeed. It’s about identifying artists who may not have had the best of everything but are making the best of everything they have.

The Importance of Work Ethic and Self-Improvement

A crucial aspect of our evaluation process is observing the artist’s work ethic and their attention to detail. We look for signs of continuous self-improvement, a willingness to learn and grow. An artist who is quick to criticize others but not self-reflective is a red flag for us. We value individuals who are serious about their art and committed to honing their skills.

Discipline: The Key to Unlocking Potential

Understanding the role of discipline in an artist’s growth is crucial to our ethos at Sprinklenet Music. It’s about more than just offering resources; it’s about nurturing a mindset where artists are motivated to utilize these tools to their fullest potential. We believe that true success in the music industry requires more than talent alone – it demands a disciplined approach to craft, development, and performance.

This discipline is what transforms potential into real, tangible artistry. It’s the driving force behind an artist’s ability to consistently improve, innovate, and captivate their audience. At Sprinklenet Music, we prioritize working with artists who demonstrate this discipline in their daily practice and performances. We look for those who are consistently honing their skills, actively seeking feedback, and showing a relentless commitment to their art.

The journey from raw talent to a polished artist is paved with dedication and hard work. Our role is to guide and support this journey, but the artist’s own discipline is the fuel that propels them forward. It’s this quality that enables them to leverage our resources effectively and carve out a unique space for themselves in the competitive world of music.

Our Approach to Artist Selection

Our strategy for discovering talent involves casting a wide net to fill our funnel with potential artist partners. However, we’re equally focused on quickly narrowing down our search to those who truly embody the qualities we seek. We don’t rush into outreach decisions; our process is deliberate and thoughtful, ensuring that when we do extend our resources, it’s to those who are ready and willing to embark on this transformative journey with us.

Seeking the Right Partners for Our Vision

We’re not just looking for artists; we’re looking for partners in a shared vision of musical excellence and growth. It’s a collaborative journey that demands dedication, passion, and a relentless pursuit of improvement. If you’re an artist with these qualities, know that there’s a place for you here, where your talents will be nurtured and your music career can flourish.

If you’re an emerging artist and interested in being a part of the Sprinklenet Music program, we’d love to hear from you. Send us some info about yourself here – New Artist Submission Form.

The Sprinklenet Music Vision: Crafting New Paths in Music Commercialization

Greetings from the vibrant coast of Colombia! I’m here to share the exhilarating journey of Sprinklenet Music, a venture that’s not just about discovering talent but also about creating multiple commercialization channels for the artists, the content, and the entire process of our operation. At Sprinklenet Music, our vision extends beyond mere talent discovery.

We’re embracing the digital age in full force, utilizing online distribution platforms to ensure our music reaches every major consumer platform. From iTunes and Spotify to TikTok and YouTube, our aim is to make our artists’ music accessible to a global audience. This isn’t just about creating music; it’s about ensuring it’s heard far and wide.In addition to music distribution, we’re venturing into the realm of digital storytelling.

We’re currently developing a documentary series that captures the essence of Sprinklenet Music and the incredible journey of our artists. This isn’t just any documentary; we’re crafting it with the quality and appeal for platforms like Netflix. Our goal is to create compelling content that not only entertains but also provides a deeper insight into the world of music production, artist development, and the unique stories that each of our talents brings to the table.

A Mission That Resonates Across Latin America

At Sprinklenet Music, our mission is twofold. Firstly, we’re tapping into the rich, rhythmic stories of Coastal Colombia – a hotbed for musical creation. While our focus spans the vibrant cities of Barranquilla, Cartagena, and Santa Marta, it’s Barranquilla that stands as the epicenter of our musical universe. This city, pulsating with life and creativity, is particularly renowned for its influence in genres like Champeta, which have become cultural cornerstones in the region.

These stories, born from the heart of Coastal Colombia, go beyond mere entertainment. They are narratives of resilience, love, heartache, and the unbridled joy found in music and dance. This emotional depth and authenticity give our music an extraordinary appeal, not just in Latin America but also among the rapidly growing Latin audience in the United States. We’re creating music and entertainment that resonates on a profound level with hundreds of millions of people, capturing the essence of a life lived fully, with all its challenges and triumphs.

Our aim at Sprinklenet Music is not just to produce music but to tell stories that echo the experiences of many. We believe these themes of perseverance, fun, and vibrant culture have a universal appeal, especially in today’s world where the Latin influence is increasingly recognized and celebrated globally. This is a demographic that is not only significant in number but also rich in cultural diversity, and we’re excited to be creating content that speaks directly to their hearts and minds.

Pioneering Fairness and Innovation in Music Deals

My approach to deal-making at Sprinklenet Music is deeply influenced by the incentive structures typical in technology venture capital. We ensure that our artists – the creators – are rewarded for their hard work and success, akin to how startups thrive under entrepreneurial models. Each artist with Sprinklenet Music is essentially their own startup, with a unique voice and vision that we’re here to amplify.

This startup approach is bolstered by our ability to maintain an ultra-low cost model for artist discovery and development. Being physically present in the region, we have an intimate understanding of the culture and the landscape, coupled with extensive experience in doing business throughout Latin America. This proximity and insight allow us to operate efficiently, unencumbered by the typical bloat and inefficiency seen in many traditional music businesses.

Our deal structures are designed to be irresistibly compelling to top-tier artists. We’re not just offering contracts; we’re offering partnerships that promise significant mutual success. This model allows us to attract the most talented and hardworking artists, those who are not only looking for a platform but also for a collaborator who values their growth and success as much as their own.

At Sprinklenet Music, our goal is twofold: to elevate our artists to incredible heights of success and wealth, and to achieve the same for Sprinklenet Music and our partners. We’re breaking away from the legacy of supporting a cumbersome, traditional structure. Instead, we embrace a lean, agile, and startup-oriented approach. This agility is our strength, allowing us to adapt quickly, make smart decisions, and focus our resources where they matter most – in the music and the artists who create it.

The Guy Hands Lesson: A Study in Industry Economics

The tale of Guy Hands’ acquisition of EMI is a poignant lesson in industry economics, one that I delved into through his book “The Dealmaker.” Hands’ account of the EMI deal is not just a fascinating story; it’s a treasure trove of insights. Through Terra Firma Capital Partners, Hands faced immense losses, primarily due to EMI’s bloated cost structure. This narrative was a stark reminder that the vast majority of artists weren’t profitable for EMI – a critical flaw in the traditional music industry model.

This is precisely where Sprinklenet Music diverges and innovates. We’ve learned from these industry pitfalls and have designed a model that emphasizes lean operations, ensuring both the artists’ and the company’s profitability. The Dealmaker served as a catalyst for me, reinforcing my belief in our approach’s efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Our strategy is grounded in a startup mentality, focusing on agility, results, and a lean structure that can’t afford to carry individuals or practices that don’t contribute to our collective success.

At Sprinklenet Music, we understand that the next billion-dollar business in the music industry won’t emerge from the established incumbents. It will spring from dynamic, innovative ventures like ours – ones that aren’t burdened by legacy practices and are free to explore new, more effective ways of operating in the music world. We are at the forefront of this transformation, shaping a future where efficiency, creativity, and profitability go hand in hand.

Sprinklenet Music article by Jamie Thompson on the music business between Barranquilla, Colombia and Miami, Florida.

Introduction

Hello, I’m Jamie Thompson, a seasoned technology entrepreneur with over two decades of experience in AI and technology product development. Having kick-started several tech ventures and collaborated closely with venture capitalists, I find myself at the helm of Sprinklenet.com, a company specializing in technology product design, development, strategy, and consulting. While my roots are deeply embedded in the tech world, my heart has always echoed with rhythms of a different kind – music.

The Genesis of Sprinklenet Music

Music has been a lifelong passion for me. Over the past four years, living in Latin America, primarily in Barranquilla, Colombia, I’ve developed a profound appreciation for the region’s rich musical heritage. Witnessing firsthand the sheer talent and dedication of young musicians in coastal Colombia in particular, I recognized a gap. Many of these artists, brimming with potential, lacked the resources and know-how to elevate their music to a professional level. This observation sparked the birth of Sprinklenet Music, a passion project aimed at nurturing and promoting these hidden gems. I started by taking a project management approach to getting from musical ideation and rough practice stages, to creating a system for “productizing” songs and making high-quality production tracks ready for digital distribution. Throughout 2023, we put together a small team of talented staff to help manage development of the full lifecycle of professional music creation. We’ll be scaling and expanding in 2024. Let me tell you a little bit more…

The First Milestone with White Lion

My journey in music investment took a concrete shape with an exciting collaboration with White Lion, a supremely talented singer-songwriter from Barranquilla. Together, we embarked on creating his debut album, ‘Sonrisa,’ a project close to both of our hearts. The album, a fusion of local sounds with a sprinkle of English lyrics, was designed to bridge the cultural expanse between Colombia’s vibrant rhythms and Miami’s melting pot of Latin cultures. Available on platforms like iTunes and Spotify, ‘Sonrisa’ stands as a testament to our collaborative spirit and shared vision. We’re excited to announce a major brand partner in 2024 for the Sonrisa album.

Investing in Music with a Tech Entrepreneur’s Lens

My experience with early-stage, high-risk tech investments significantly influences my approach to music investing. I approach each project like a seed-stage tech investor, analyzing the potential risks and rewards. Sprinklenet Music isn’t just about financial returns; it’s an endeavor to create a lasting impact in the music industry and a legacy of enduring value. I often reference Blackstone’s investment in Hipgnosis records when discussing Sprinklenet Music’s investment thesis. We’re here to build value over time, much like in the world of technology startups. There are a variety of revenue streams associated with building a portfolio of music IP including royalties, licensed content with partners, live performances and merchandise. We’re focused squarely on producing amazing music for now because without that nothing else matters, but future revenue streams are part of overall plan once we’ve got a few more albums under our belt.

Living Between Two Cultures – Barranquilla and Miami

Being based in Barranquilla while frequently traveling to Miami offers a unique perspective. The cultural richness of these cities, from the vibrant street art to the lively music scenes, inspires my work at Sprinklenet Music. These locales are not just geographical points but wellsprings of creative inspiration that fuel our projects.

It’s fascinating to observe the diverse tapestry of Latin cultures in Miami, a true melting-pot where the rich traditions of various Latin American countries intermingle. When I speak of Latin cultures, I emphasize the plural form because the cultural fabric of Miami is woven from the distinct threads of each Latin nation.

Latin culture is far from monolithic; it’s a vibrant mosaic where each country contributes its unique flavor. From Colombia to Venezuela, Cuba to the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, each brings its own distinct music, language, fashion, dance, food, and art. Living in Barranquilla, I am immersed in a Colombian ambiance that pulses with its own unique rhythm, markedly different from the beats you’d experience in, say, San Juan, Puerto Rico. Yet, despite these differences, there’s a beautiful convergence in Miami. Here, these individual cultural elements blend, creating a new, shared identity that still respects and celebrates the individuality of each culture. This multicultural blend is particularly evident in the music scene, where the baseline vibe of Barranquilla interlaces with other regional rhythms to create a rich, eclectic sound that is uniquely Miami.

For now, however, our primary focus at Sprinklenet Music is on tapping into the emerging talent pool of musical artists in Barranquilla. Being there offers us a unique opportunity to dive deep into the local scene, uncovering and nurturing the extraordinary talent that Colombia has to offer. The richness and diversity of Colombian music alone provide a vast canvas for us to explore. With such an abundance of talent and creativity flowing through this region, we find ourselves with more than enough to fuel our passion and keep us engaged for the foreseeable future. As we continue to grow and evolve, our roots in Barranquilla’s vibrant music culture will always be at the heart of what we do at Sprinklenet Music.

Unfair Advantage – A Local’s Perspective

Living in Barranquilla provides an unparalleled vantage point. Surrounded by aspiring musicians and dancers, I am in the heart of a cultural movement. Icons like Shakira, J Balvin, and Karol G are the role models for a generation eager to follow in their footsteps. In Barranquilla, the blend of economic and cultural dynamics creates an ideal breeding ground for emerging talent.

Music here is more than just a form of entertainment; it’s a reflection of society and culture. Barranquilla, a vibrant, tropical, coastal Caribbean city, buzzes with a unique energy shaped by its mixed and often challenging socioeconomic landscape. Despite a significant portion of the population living below what would be considered the poverty level in the U.S., there’s a palpable sense of resilience and contentment among the people. This resilience is most vibrant during the night, when the city comes alive with music and dance, helping people transcend the monotony and hardships of daily life.

The stark contrast between economic classes is evident in Barranquilla. On one hand, you have hardworking individuals making a living with horse-drawn carriages, selling avocados and tropical fruits for the equivalent of a few dollars a day. On the other hand, there’s an affluent class living in luxury. This socioeconomic spectrum provides a rich backdrop for the stories and emotions that are captured in the music emerging from this city.

Living in Barranquilla and having grown up in the U.S., I find myself in a unique position, bridging two very different worlds. This experience has given me insights that most Americans, and indeed many Colombians and other Latinos who haven’t been to the U.S., might not possess. Understanding these contrasts and the life experiences of people in Barranquilla enriches the vision, development, and execution of what we’re doing at Sprinklenet Music. Our projects don’t just aim to produce music; they strive to capture and convey the essence of life here, reflecting a rich tapestry of experiences that range from struggle to joy, from hardship to celebration. I think these are universal characteristics all humans understand, but putting the experiences of young, Latin artists to song in both Spanish and English requires a fluent and fluid understanding that only comes with total immersion.

This immersion into Barranquilla’s culture, combined with my American upbringing, provides me with a unique lens through which I view and understand the music industry. It’s this perspective that shapes the approach of Sprinklenet Music, as we seek to tell the stories of this vibrant city and its people through the universal language of music. I try to share this with everyone involved with our productions while learning from each of the artists we work with.

The Road Ahead for Sprinklenet Music

As we look towards 2024, our focus is on discovering and collaborating with new talent, especially from Barranquilla and Cartagena. We prioritize crafting fair, transparent deals, drawing from my experience in venture negotiations. Each agreement is tailored to be direct, engaging, and forward-looking, ensuring that everyone involved is moving in the same direction. Our aim is to make great music while establishing a sustainable, scalable business model.

The Fusion of Latin and American Music Genres

The excitement of returning to the studio is palpable. Our goal is to blend Latin and American genres, creating a unique sound that resonates with diverse audiences. We have several exciting projects lined up for 2024, promising a year of innovative music and fresh talent. White Lion and Sprinklenet Music are also working on a new album for 2024, so stay-tuned for that!

Conclusion

Sprinklenet Music is more than just a business; it’s an odyssey into the pulsating heart of music. As I sit atop a hotel in Brickell, Miami, my thoughts eagerly drift back to Barranquilla, where the studio awaits. This journey we’re on isn’t just about creating and investing in music; it’s about building a community where each note, each beat, tells a story.

To music enthusiasts and fans around the world, we extend a warm invitation to join us in celebrating the rich tapestry of sounds and stories we’re weaving at Sprinklenet Music. Twangy Tunes to Barranquilla Beats: My Eclectic Musical Voyage into Sprinklenet Music

Hello from the pulsating shores of Barranquilla, Colombia! I’m Jamie Thompson, the entrepreneur behind the business and technology consulting firm, Sprinklenet, and now its musical venture spin-out, Sprinklenet Music. While tech is my terrain, today’s tale is tuned to a different key — my musical odyssey and the business of a startup focused on building longterm value in an asset class that I predict will be enormously important in the next decade and beyond.

The Rhythms of My Childhood

It all began at home as a kid. My dad had a soft spot for the twangy echoes of classic country. Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Conway Twitty, Rex Allen Jr., Hank Williams Jr. and many more cowboy crooners – their voices formed the backdrop of my early years. They weren’t just tunes playing in the smoky basement; they were foundational to my musical evolution.

Old country music tells stories about love, loss, challenges, and working through all the shit that life throws at you. These are timeless storylines that I’ve noticed can be successfully applied to all varieties of lyrical music genres. In fact, as you’ll soon see with Sprinklenet Music, we’re focused on Latin pop coming out of Colombia, but there will be a heavy emphasis on well-crafted lyrics and beats that echo the storytelling vibes of other genres that have created timeless hits.

Pablo Picasso said: “Good artists copy, great artists steal.” As I look at the world around us today and I see the joys and struggles of humans everywhere, I’m reminded of many a country song playing at my childhood home while my dad worked in solitude on various carpentry and electric projects.

We’ll be getting inspiration from the universally useful tales woven into music history from past decades and making them our own through an integration with Colombian culture and modern Latin reggaeton beats. I’m certainly not going to force anything when it comes to the artists – they are in charge and I’m just here to run the business like a dutiful fiscal servant, but I hope to offer guidance and some insight into how and why some of the best lyrics of all time resonate with people year after year, decade after decade. Think: Hotel California, Stairway to Heaven, Let It Bet, Man In the Mirror, and so many more brilliant songs that transcend time and place.

Actually, who am I kidding, of course I am going to guide each and every artist that we fund into focusing on music that has mainstream appeal. That’s part of what we’re doing here. Modern venture capital at the seed stage makes market-based evaluations at every step of the journey.  We’ll be doing the same with music production and marketing. Feedback loops and authentic community engagement are critical signals that influence whether or not singers get additional resources or not. That’s just the way it goes.

Side note on Pablo Picasso… before he pioneered Cubism and made his prolific contributions to Surrealism and Symbolism art, was trained as a classical painter whose earliest work, pre Blue Period, more closely resembled something one might see at an Italian Renaissance art festival. Artists evolve.

From Rock ‘n’ Roll to Island Vibes

Growing up in the 90s, I didn’t want to be too associated with my dad’s “old” music, so I gravitated to stars that were still a little less than contemporary, but not so twangy; Elvis’s flavor of rock ‘n’ roll and Jimmy Buffett’s island vibes captivated me. The recent news of Buffett’s passing was a significant (sad) moment, a reminder of the impermanence of life and the endurance of music. For a few days or so, it really made me think long and hard about just how fragile life is for all of us. I wept for Jimmy’s death. But after a few days of sadness I realized that more than anything, we all would do well to remember how he, through music and lyrics, brought so much joy to millions of people decade after decade. Really quite a remarkable life to be able to bring smiles and happiness to regular people like all of us who deal with our own challenges, day in and day out.

Human mortality is a constant thought for me and reason to pray on a daily basis. It’s also a reason to build legacies that live on for our children and our children’s children. I absolutely love music, the genius of artists who can create cultural movements that shape societies through their artistic prowess; and while I am not one of those artists myself, I believe that through a rigorous, venture-minded approach to running Sprinklenet Music, we can build legacies vis-a-vis music IP and simultaneously create, influence and share the brilliance of the artists we work with.

Electronic Waves and Dance Kings

Buffet’s death did hit me hard, but as they say, the show must go on, and other astounding music pioneers like Giorgio Moroder who, with a single ‘click’ on a track, forever altered the course of music history, are also to be mentioned in shaping my foray into Sprinklenet Music. The electronic waves of Daft Punk mixed with the magic of Giovanni the Italian disco maestro, continued to shape my affinity for diverse sounds that would eventually lead me to the beats of Joe Arroyo and the Costeño dance kings of champeta.

Keep an eye on Jefry Oquendo.

I think that innovation happens in music and dance just like it happens in technology — and can impact culture and business in huge ways.

Modern Country and Beyond

Country would keep playing a starring role in my playlists. Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, George Straight, Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney, Dwight Yokam, Randy Travis, Shania Twain, Wynonna Judd, and Bonnie Rait — the list goes on. The modern sounds of Zac Brown Band, Luke Bryan, Luke Combs, Jason Aldean, and Taylor Swift’s early country offerings made sure I stayed hooked.

It’s no surprise that some of America’s top grossing artists of all time are Country Music superstars. It’s the vibe, the story, the life – tens of millions, if not hundreds of millions of people in the U.S. alone identify on a deep, personal level with Country Music. As demographics shift, so to do the cultural inclinations of the next generation of royalty paying listeners and the brands that advertise alongside them. Humanity, our innermost desires and goals remain fairly constant, but the beats, the lyrics and even the languages change flavors and packaging.

My Latin Love Affair

Destiny had its plans, leading me to Mexico and eventually to Colombia. I have crisscrossed both countries with my wife over the past 3 years. The travel adventures opened a whole new world of Latin melodies. Legends like Luis Miguel and Vicente Fernandez, modern icons like Julio Iglesias, Enrique Iglesias, Shakira, Maluma, Karol G, Ricky Martin, and Gloria Estefan started dominating my audio space.

Being able to infuse the senses with Latin music, Latin food, Latin people and Latin cerveza all at the same time has really given me the true experience. It’s been unbelievable.

A New Beat in Barranquilla

When I moved to Barranquilla it wasn’t just a new address; it was a sensory explosion. Shakira and Sofia Vergara’s hometown, it’s a city that lives and breathes music, peaking during the Barranquilla Carnival. The local vibes of Champeta and Salsa are everywhere, and I was completely entranced.

Sprinklenet Music: A Tech-Driven Beat

Amidst this soundscape, I saw raw talent yearning for opportunities. Their challenges weren’t too different from tech startups in cities like Boston and San Francisco — they need resources, mentorship, and a guiding hand. My tech-entrepreneur instincts kicked in, leading to the birth of Sprinklenet Music.

What started as a passion project to uplift local talents morphed into a structured mission. While navigating the Colombian legal intricacies and mastering Spanish contracts was a challenge, the focus was clear: nurture talent, establish genuine connections and put the pieces in place to build an enduring portfolio of music IP that can be licensed and sold upstream as time goes on. Colombian law is more or less based on common law like the U.S. and England, so while there are some nuances, it hasn’t been too bad. I’ve had to make sure our music IP contracts and overall approach is wholistic so that we cover both the U.S. and Colombia.

Personally, I’m worried about of the possibility (probability) of a decade of significant, systemic inflation, or stagflation at best, around the world and major changes to how generational wealth is created, so a big part of my economic thesis looks to companies like PepsiCo, Nestle and other CPGs who have been historically adept at navigating inflationary periods because they can make price adjustments relatively easily and still face no shortage of consumer consumption.

Music is similar in an odd way.  Royalties shift upward as the platforms adjust course.  And frankly, like any long-term holding, as long as the original costs of acquisition are as low as possible and you’re producing cash flow with yields greater than other dividend paying assets, you can withstand a few storms and still squeeze ongoing value in just about any economic environment.

Music as an Asset Class

Let’s touch more on the intriguing part for many of you: the business of music. Icons in the industry, like the asset management firm Blackstone and its portfolio company Hipgnosis Records, have underscored music as a tangible asset class, highlighting its potential in the private equity sector at large.

As the value of music royalties becomes increasingly recognized, there’s significant potential in curating music IP. The aim? To produce and bring to market the next Latin sensation, while also diving deep into the promising world of music as a financial asset class.

The Harmonious Road Ahead

Peering into the future, I envision a beautiful blend of my roots in country music with the Latin rhythms I’ve come to adore. Dive into this harmonious journey with me through Sprinklenet Music.

Stay tuned!

The Business Case for Early-Stage Music Production in Colombia

In the heart of the bustling Latin music scene, a new venture is blossoming in Barranquilla, Colombia – Sprinklenet Music. Rooted in a country that has produced the likes of global superstars like Shakira, Karol G., J Balvin, and Maluma, Sprinklenet Music is set to transform the music landscape by investing in its most priceless asset – raw, emerging talent.

Why Invest in Music Production?

  1. Enduring Revenue Streams: Music’s unique property is its lasting financial impact. Unlike other commodities that depreciate, a hit song can generate dividends for decades. Take Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’, a track that secures over $2 million in annual royalties for the artist. Such evergreen hits serve as testimonials to music’s enduring earning potential.
  2. Inflation-Proofing: In an economy fraught with fluctuations, music royalties offer a compelling hedge against inflation risk. Similar to how FMCGs and CPGs like Pepsico, Nestle, and Coca-Cola adeptly adjust to inflation, music IP ensures consistent returns in an ever-evolving market.
  3. Venture-Style Selection: Sprinklenet Music adopts a venture approach in artist selection, relying on early market feedback, comprehensive testing, and seasoned intuition. By channeling investments into artists with palpable potential, the model ensures optimized returns on investments.

Colombia: The Melting Pot of Musical Mastery

Colombia’s rich musical heritage is no secret. With the global explosion of reggaeton, Latin pop, and urban beats, Colombian artists have showcased the nation’s intrinsic ability to produce chart-toppers.

Sprinklenet Music, with its state-of-the-art studio in Barranquilla, serves as a launchpad for these budding artists, offering them world-class production facilities. By tapping into this pulsating reservoir of talent, the venture is poised to be a significant contributor to the global Latin music wave.

Seizing the Opportunity

The music industry’s profitability is witnessing acknowledgment from major investment giants. Blackstone’s billion-dollar infusion into Hipgnosis Song Fund exemplifies the growing confidence in music IP’s return on investment.

With Sprinklenet Music’s strategic presence in Colombia, it stands at the cusp of a paradigm shift in the Latin music industry. It’s not just about creating music; it’s about crafting legacies.

In Conclusion

As Latin beats reverberate across global charts, the business case for early-stage music production has never been stronger. Colombia, with its rich tapestry of culture and history, presents a goldmine of opportunities. Sprinklenet Music, through its venture-driven approach and keen eye for talent, is perfectly positioned to lead the next Latin music revolution.

For investors and aficionados alike, the message is clear: The rhythms of Colombia are the future, and the future sounds promising.
